Where should I start out getting into fixed gear bike racing?

Question: Where should I start out getting into fixed gear bike racing?
I’m new to fixed gear riding, and was wondering where’s a good place to start for everything fixed gear, ie parts, accessories, how to guides, repair & maintenance , life style etc… I’m looking for a good starter bike and some more basic knowledge to become a better rider.

Answer:

Answer by David D.
Start by seeing if there is a Velodrome track in your area. Link below. If not, you’ll be racing on the streets (illegal). Look for cycling clubs in your area. Ask around at all the local bike shops. Good starter bike? See Bikes Direct on the web – 2nd link below. You may want to get one with a flip/flop hub. That way you could have a true fixed gear for the track & a freewheel hub (able to coast) on the streets. Repair & Maintenance? 3rd link down – Bicycle Tutor.com.

My 8 year old wants to start BMX racing. What brand of bike should I start him off with.?

Question: My 8 year old wants to start BMX racing. What brand of bike should I start him off with.?
I am aware that there are dozens of bike manufacturers out there. How do I know which one is the best option for an 8 year old just starting out? All I know is that he needs a 20″ bike, and that I would prefer a lighter frame for him to handle. We are looking for something that he can easily get about two years out of. A used BMX race bike would be ideal as we are just starting out. If anyone could steer me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Well, I used to be into BMX a while back, but have since moved on to mountain biking…

My current bike is a ‘Giant’ (I really like it)… When I did some BMX biking, I had a ‘Specialized’ BMX (but I was in my early teens). Even still, although I can’t suggest a specific model, I would recommend most of the big name brands (Giant, Specialized, etc).

That said, since your kid is pretty young, it really won’t matter which bike you get (he will outgrow it so fast)… but at the same time, don’t get a really crappy bike just because its cheap – they might loose interest if the sport is unnecessarily hard. (basically, stick with an aluminum frame and you will be fine).
