Question: Difference between road bikes and cyclocross bikes?

Road bike is designed for the roads. CX bikes for mixed use. So as expected the CX bike will be heavier, wider wheels, gearing leaning more to a mtn bike’s. When I think of a CX bike, I think of a hybrid with drop bars.

I’ve just started getting into competitive bike racing and am looking for a entry level bike. My budget is around 700 or 800 dollars. I’ve heard the Trek 1000 is good (is that true?), are there other options that you would suggest? Do I need to spend more to get a decent level entry bike, or can I get by for that? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

I own a Trek 1000 and have been happy with it. That said, I’ve heard there are better bikes out there for the money. Trek tends to be light on the components end…slightly lower brakes, shifters, etc. But it seems that most entry level bikes are close to the same, dollar for dollar.
Question: About how much does 1 mountain biking mile equal to road miles?
Didn’t really know how to work the question, but I’m trying to ask what the equivalent of a mountain bike mile to a road mile is! Thanks!

Hm.
I would say that 1 mile on a road bike is equal to about 5280 feet on a mountain bike. There is no “bonus” for the different terrain.

Good and cheap in road bikes DO NOT go together! If you want good then plan on spending over $ 900 and up if you want cheap then plan on spending less than $ 500. You wont win any races on a sub $ 800 bike and you wont even place. Since you dont know what you are looking for then I would suggest (like we always do) that you visit one of your local shops (that sell only bikes) to get some better ideas of what you should spend and what will best suit your long term needs. This would be a good bike to start with: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1073180_-1_45500_20000_45501 and this would be a Great bike: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1073112_-1_23000_20000_23003 and this is one to get you started: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/CatalogSearchResultView?catalogId=10551&storeId=10052&langId=-1&sortBy=iphrase+relevance%2f%2f0&searchType=categoryId&searchTerm=400315&beginIndex=0&pageSize=16&ipState=c0%3di%253A1%253B3%253Biphrase%2bbundle%2btaxonomy%2bid%2bfrom%2broot%253B400315%253B%253A400315%253B1%252C1%253B0%26q%3d16%26a1%3diphrase%2bbundle%2btaxonomy%252F%252Fv%253A0%26a0%3diphrase%2brelevance%252F%252Fv%253A0%26i%3dsitemap%2bid%26k0.0%3d400315%26qt%3d1249304978%26qid%3dqQoR1vYHkF7mt%26vid%3dvQYV6Nq9fl8RB%26ioe%3dUTF-8%26s2%3dsitemap%2bid%252F%252F1%26qtid%3dqQoR1vYHkF7mt%26s1%3diphrase%2brelevance%252F%252F0%26rid%3dr861aDjRXtS4p%26s0%3diphrase%2brelevance%252F%252F0%26t%3d0%26m0%3diphrase%2bbundle%2bid%26mcmode%3dtest&cn1=f03%2f%2f0+-+1%2c000%2f%2fp%2f%2f0%2f%2f15%7c%7c&categoryId=400315 dont think that this one will get you on the podium but it will allow you to finish. Also take note of the components on each one too. There is the difference and in the frame too. That expensive one is all Carbon fiber with the best that Shimano has to offer in Dura Ace.
