For DH… i usually use flat soled shoes similar to skate shoes. 661, 5ten, fox, oakley, etc have some nice shoes available. Some you can even remove a plate to make them clipless ready. The ONLY time I clip in is when i’m only doing singletrack or wide open trails.

what kind of bike would you need for mountain bike racing?

Question: what kind of bike would you need for mountain bike racing?
I have a small mountain bike already but not sure if it would be good enough. Also how much does it cost to enter races and do you need a licence to ride at junior level?
Any information on what types of tracks there are, what sort of tyres do i need and are there any good tracks in South East London/ England?

Answer:

Answer by grae
it all depends on the type of racing, crosscountry, downhill, 4X.

assuming its the type of riding that you do at the moment then just use the bike and tyres you’ve got, if you then enjoy it and feel like you need a more competitive bike then you could upgrade. if you find you dont enjoy it as much as you thought you would then you havent wasted money on a new bike you wont use.

Ask in your local bike shop (probably not halfords) they will know about local events and clubs and may even race themselves.

What kind of bike should I buy if I want to begin mountain biking?

Question: What kind of bike should I buy if I want to begin mountain biking?
I’m a teenage boy looking to start mountain biking/ freeride. I’ve ridden bikes before but I’ve never REALLY been offroad. I want a bike that is capable of going offroad and on the road. Preferably one that is not to cheap. What kind of bike should I get and where?
By “fit” im guessing you mean how comfortable i feel on the bikes? and so i should just go to the shops and browse..see which ones i like?

Visit the local bike shops. Fit is very important and all of the manufacturers have a wide price range of bikes to chose from. Google ” bike shops xxxxx ” where xxxxx is your zip code.

Edit:
Fit is the correct size bike for your height and inseam. It has a lot to do with comfort. A good bike shop will help you to get the correct size bike.
