2011 May Weekly Race Series Sundance XC Mountain Bike Race

This is the unedited video of my race at the Weekly Race Series Sundance XC mountain bike race at Sundance, Utah, on May 25, 2011. We raced the Archies Loop course. My category did 2 laps for a total of about 11.5 miles and about 1430 feet of climbing. Due to some problems with my bike, I got to the starting line a little while after my group had left, so I spent the race catching as many of them as I could. utahmountainbiking.com www.weeklyraceseries.com Filmed by Ian Beaty

aluminum cyclocross bike?

Question: aluminum cyclocross bike?
I am thinking of buying an aluminum cyclocross bike. I currently ride a Reynolds 853 steel road bike. My concern is the reputation of aluminum having an unforgiving ride. I don’t mind the stiffness, just the vibration. Would the fatter tires (32c) cancel out the high frequency vibrations and take the edge off of the hard thumps? Thanks

Yes bigger tires do help. And if you do buy a carbon fork it will help as well.

What can i do to my Honda xr100 dirt bike to make it a racing bike?

Question: What can i do to my Honda xr100 dirt bike to make it a racing bike?
i have a Honda xr100 dirt bike and i wanna race it what cani do to it to make it a racing bike

Answer by John R
The Honda XR100 R looks like a race bike, but it really isn’t.

It lacks good racing suspension and the engine isn’t powerful enough.

I would suggest you just go out and purchase a used 85cc 2-stroke, such as a KX.85.

To make the XR competitive you will need to do the following:
1. After market front forks
2. After market rear shock.
3. Port and polish the intake and exhaust ports.
4. 5 angle valve job on your valves.
5. Larger cam with longer duration.
6. Roller lifters.
7. High dome piston for greater compression.
8. Larger carb.
9. Open up the air box to get more air in.

I’ll stop here, there are more.

Those modifications are going to cost you a few grand, the shock and fork alone are going to run you close to $ 2000. For the that much you can get a used 85cc 2-stroke that you can put premix in, race and be competitive.

I advise that you do not waste the money on the XR and dump that money into a racing 2-stroke.

best cyclocross “full suspension” bike for less than $1,500?

Question: best cyclocross “full suspension” bike for less than ,500?
I’m looking for a “full suspension” cyclocross bike that gives you that “tight, just right” shock absorption without actual efficiency draining shocks (not sure if cyclocross even has shocks per se)…for under $ 1,500. Will be riding on the street about 7 miles per day and off road about 7 miles a day as well: off road for me = mostly dirt, sand, gravel, some mud but little in the way of rocks and roots. Thanks.

I answered this for you privately already. What you want here does not exist. Cyclocross bikes do not have shocks either rear or front that I am aware of. That said this is a bike of that type: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1073267_-1_45500_20000_45501 and most all of these will have the road bike geometry …not mtn bike geometry. I think an XC bike in your price range with a Fox RP2 shock would be best, it will have the option of a near lock-out in the rear with any other fork name with a lock out as well which make for a better ride on paved surfaces and with a flip of a lever you are ready for those off road excursions. The higher in price you go for full suspension bikes the more features you get. Your $ 1500 makes it a bit difficult to get everything you want.
